Red Tailed Kite Necklace
The Red Tailed Kite Necklace — Birds of Wiltshire Collection
A tribute to one of Wiltshire’s most graceful raptors, the Red Tailed Kite Necklace captures the sweep of wind, the flick of a forked tail, and the warm reddish-brown tone of a bird that has reclaimed the skies of southern England.
Design and Making
Handmade beginning with an original model sculpted in oven-bake clay.
The model was translated into metal using the ancient craft of sand casting, cast first in a silver-copper alloy and refined into a permanent master for repeat casting.
Each finished piece is cast in sterling silver, and often in Argentium silver — the material I prefer — made from collected cut-offs and reclaimed precious metal. This use of recycled metal is integral to the work: 100% recycled precious metals, crafted in Britain.
Natural Accuracy and Story
The necklace honors the Red Tailed Kite’s distinctive silhouette: the long, forked tail and broad wings visible when quartering the chalk downlands.
It reflects the kite’s dual nature as both hunter and scavenger, and celebrates the conservation success that has brought this species back to Wiltshire’s hedgerows and skies.
Wearability and Intent
A bespoke, no-gender-bias design intended for anyone who appreciates wildlife, British natural heritage, and meaningful craft.
Subtle enough for everyday wear, detailed enough to start conversations about conservation and local nature.
Why this piece matters
Handcrafted using traditional techniques and modern recycled precious metal practice — a piece that connects craft, place, and purpose.
Each necklace is a small, wearable celebration of a species that epitomizes recovery and coexistence.
